An ivory netsuke of a seated Dutchman examining his bald pate in a mirror
Circa 1880, with apocryphal signature of Minkoku

H. 3.2 cm

The Dutchman, wearing Western attire and with curly hair, inspects himself in the mirror which is resting on his knee with his jolly mirror-image visible. The resemblance with imagery of Narcissus is uncanny, and the carver literally holds a mirror in front of our face.
