Osaka, circa 1860

Carved from a well-figured piece of pale ivory and inlaid with a sprig of aoi (hollyhock), the leaves of malachite, the stems and himotoshi linings of buffalo horn, beautiful patina with fine hairlines all

Signed and with seal ohara.

L. 4.1 cm across

In our opinion, the signature is confidently incised, while the seal seems rather more hesitant. Inlaid work is not unknown in Mitsuhiro’s work.  One has to think only of some of his fulling blocks with inlaid geese.
