Circa 1780

The God of Longevity standing, smiling as he leans forward beneath the weight of a laden furoshiki (wrapping cloth) tied around his tall head, his arms folded to his chest within the sleeves of his long robe, the wood slightly worn and bearing a fine patina, signed Masatomo.

H. approx. 5 cm

Private collection, Germany

This netsuke seems to be by the same hand as a netsuke formerly in the Geneva collection of François Storno, offered but not sold in his sale at Christie’s London, 16th May 2007, lot 205. Inexplicably the fine collection of netsuke did not do well in the sale, however, many were subsequently sold very well privately by Rutherston.
